The Sanskrit word Mula translates to ‘The Root’ or ‘The Foundation.’ This nakshatra is ruled by the deity of procreation and is associated with the planet Ketu. Ketu is the planet that is associated with our past lives or roots. This is exactly what Mula nakshatra represents. Individuals under this nakshatra want to understand the roots or origin of everything, Mula is also associated with the fierce goddess kali who wears a skull of heads around her neck and destroys all evil forces.The nakshatra of Mula is ruled by several deities, Nirutti, Rakhshasa, and Mahakali. According to mythology, during Samudramanthan, when the ocean milk was churned between demigoddess and demons, first came the poison. From the surface of that poison came the elder sister of goddess Lakshmi Jyeshta was born also known as dhumavati or Nirutti. Nirutti was exactly the opposite of goddess Laxmi. She was ugly, dark complexion, unattractive body. After the birth of Jyestha Laxmi was born from the same ocean. Jyestha was married to sage Dussaha. Sage Dussaha started regretting this marriage and left Jyeshta. Jyestha got jealous and cursed goddess Laxmi. Laxmi took pity on her and gave her a special place and took an oath. She decided to curse every household where poverty, grief, and sorrows are not honoured or made fun of. She decided to leave every household where the poor are ridiculed.
